Abstract:

The chemical compositions of the essential oil from Myrica rubra Var. astropurea Tsen. leaveswere analyzed and identified by the GC-MS analysis and the Kovats retention index. The antioxidant activity of the essential oilwas also investigated with three different methods: the 1, 1-diphenyl-2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenger, the β-carotene bleaching test and the thiobarbituric acid reactive species assay. The results show that the essential oil is constituted mainly by sesquiterpenes ( 97. 45% ) and dominated with β-caryophyllene ( 17. 67%) ,(E) -nerolidol (16. 68% ) , 5-hydroxycalamenene ( 7. 13% ) , β-selinene ( 6. 63% ) , isocaryophyllene ( 6. 46% )and α-cadinene (5. 81% ) , respectively, and that the essential oil possesses definite scavenging efficacy on radicals and significant antioxidant activity in lipid systems ( account for 60%~85% of that of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) ) , which may result from the large content of 5-hydroxycalamenene.
