In this paper, first, the axial bearing capacities of short concrete-filled steel tubular ( CFST) columns with thickness-variable steel plate and with two novel types of intersecting connections are analyzed, and the corresponding calculation formula is proposed. Then, the static loading tests of the two types of connections are simulated using the finite element method, and the variations of the bearing capacity with the intersecting angle as well as with the thickness of the elliptical plate, the lining plate, the reinforcing plate and the flange plate are analyzed, the results according well with the test ones. It is found that the elliptical plate, the lining plate and the reinforcing plate all enhance the confinement effect on the core concrete, that the bearing capacity of the connections increase with the intersecting angle as well as with the thickness of the elliptical plate and the lining plate, while it is insensitive to the thickness of the reinforcing plate and the flange plate, and that, the proposed formula is applicable due to its high accuracy of estimating the bearing capacity of connections.
