Abstract:

In order to correctly describe and explain the sudden failure of a base in stability losing, the stability of the strip foundation on clay base is analyzed by using the theory of cusp-catastrophe model. The efects of the wea-kening function of clay, the base parameters, the ground overload and the second-order effect of displacement, etc.on the base stability and its catastrophe are discussed, with the catastrophe and failure conditions being finally pro-posed.Analytical results show that the catastrophe theory fairly well explains the objective phenomenon of sudden stability losing and the failure of a base, and that the ground overload, the soil density and the second-order efect of displacement are advantageous of the base stability
