In order to solve the integration and reuse problems of design information in computer aided process planning,a method based on delta-volume decomposition and combination strategy is proposed for the recognition of process features, according to the analyses of the existing feature recognition methods. Then, the basic principle and the holistic framework of this method are respectively analyzed and introduced, and the overall feature recognition flow, including generation, decomposition, combination, search matching of the delta-volume,and capturing process features,is expounded. Moreover, some discussions are gradually carried out on the delta-volume decomposition and the combination strategy fusing geometry information, design information and process planning knowledge as well as two methods guided by this strategy, namely, the information description method of the model describing the process feature recognition and the feature doubly matching method used in the processes of the decomposition
of delta-volume and the combination of delta volume cells. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed recognition method is verified by an example.
