Abstract:

A new kind of activated carbon composite enwrapped by microfibers was prepared via the wet papermaking process and the sintering process, by using bamboo fibers, ceramic fibers and micron-sized activated carbon as the materials. The apparent structure of the composite was then analyzed by means of SEM, finding that the junctures of ceramic fibers are completely sintered together to form a three-dimension network, and that activated carbon is well enwrapped by the microfibrous network. Moreover, the nitrogen adsorption isotherms and pore size distributions of both the original activated carbon and the composite were measured using an ASAP-2020 adsorption apparatus. The results show that the BET specific surface areas of the original activated carbon and the composite are re- spectively 690 m2/g and 428 m2/g, and that the activated carbon enwrapped in the composite keeps a high BET specific surface area of 638 m2/g, which is 92.5% of the original.
