Abstract:

The effects of fillers, such as mineral fillers, cement and fibers, on the pavement performance of asphalt binder are quantitatively investigated by rheology methodology. The results show that fillers can obviously improve the high- temperature performance of asphalt binder with different degrees, and that, in the same proportion of mixture, cement has a stronger improving effect than mineral filler, and so does polyacrylonitrile fiber than basalt fiber. These conclusions are then proved by Marshall stability test and CPN rutting test of asphalt mixtures. Moreover, it is found that, after the addition of fillers, the fatigue parameter of asphalt binder is obviously improved. So, there develops a scientific method which is effective in deciding the optimum filler content, thus balancing the high- temperature performance and the fatigue performance of asphalt binder .
