Abstract:

The swelling and dissolving of cotton fibers in zinc chloride solution during the production of vulcanized paper were investigated and their influences on the structure of the prepared vulcanized paper were analyzed. The results show that cotton fibers swell as soon as they contact with zinc chloride solution, with the swelling ratio varying from 1. 2 to 1. 3,that the swelling ratio is higher when there exists severe internal fibrillation, and that, after
the treatment with zinc chloride solution, the crystallization index of cotton fibers decreases from 80. 1% to 76. 5%,the intermolecular hydrogen bonds weaken, and the crystal form keeps unchanged. Moreover,it is found that the intense swelling and dissolving of fibers result in compact contact and more bonds, thus greatly decreasing the porosity and enhancing the compactness and uniformity of the vulcanized paper.
