Abstract:

With the extensive use o nickel silver in jewelry manufacturing, the nickel release rate of this material has become a universal concern for jewelry industry and consumers. In this paper,BZn10-25 nickel silver was cho-senas the experimental material, and its nickel release rates under different conditions were tested according to the EN1811 standard. The results show that(1)the heat and surface treatment methods significantly affect the nickel release rate;(2)the sandblasting surface with 100-mesh quartz sand and the polishing surface under high-tempera-ture quenching are both of the highest nickel release rate, while the polishing surface under medium-temperature tempering is of the lowest rate;and(3)no matter what condition there is,the nickel release rate of BZn10-25 nickel silver is far more than the limit specified by the Nickel Directive, which means that the jewelry made with this material is likely to cause nickel allergy.
