Abstract: A survey on the acoustic condition of 14 primary and secondary school classrooms in subtropical region was carried out. Room acoustic parameters, total sound level during teaching periods, tearcher's sound level and occupied noise level were measured to evaluate the acoustic environment of primary and secondary school class-rooms. The result shows that unoccupied acoustic parameters is significantly related to building parameters, and unoccupied acoustic conditions affect the noise levels during teaching periods. To get good speech intelligibility, the volume per seat needs to be controlled when building the classroom.

Key words: subtropical region, acoustic environment, primary and secondary school, common classroom
