Abstract: In order to improve the thermoplasticity of polyimide,a series of novel quaternary copolymerized poly-imide materials were successfully synthesized by two-step method with 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic anhydride(PMDA) and 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride ( s-BPDA) as dianhydride,4,4'-oxydianiline(ODA) and 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane (BAPP) as diamine. The synergistic effect of rigid bi-phenyl groups with flexible monomers and pendant methyl groups on the properties of polyimide was studied. The molecular structure, thermoplasticity and heat resistance of the polyimides were characterized by FTIR,XRD,DMA,TGA and other testing methods. The results show that the series of quaternary copolymerized polyimides have good thermoplasticity and heat resistance. Particularly, when the molar fraction ratio of PMDA ∶ s-BPDA ∶ ODA ∶BAPP is 70 ∶ 30 ∶ 70 ∶ 30,the polyimide exhibits excellent thermoplasticity and heat resistance. What’s more, its good solubility in aprotic polar solvent can greatly improve the processing properties of the polyimide in a solvent or molten state.
