Abstract

A conceptual design of energy-absorbing sandwich engine hood with tetra-chiral honeycomb core was proposed to reduce pedestrian head injury in car accidents. Finite element models of the headform impactor, the tetra-chiral honeycomb and the traditional hexagonal honeycomb sandwich energy-absorbing engine hoods were con- structed. The performances of the two types of hoods for pedestrian head protection were simulated and compared. The results show that, compared with hexagonal honeycomb, the tetra-chiral honeycomb sandwich engine hood can reduce the head collision injury more effectively. The tetra-chiral honeycomb core energy-absorbing sandwich en- gine hood can provide reference for new energy-absorbing engine hood design for pedestrian head protection in car accidents.
