Abstract

In this paper, the analytical solution of the pipeline during ultra-deep S-lay installation was obtained based on the theory of singular perturbation. Then, the effects of tension, water depth and current force on the pipeline's configuration and bending moment were investigated. Moreover,a numerical simulation of the pipeline installation was conducted by means of the finite element method, and the results were compared with the theoreti-cal singular perturbation solution. Theoretical results show that (1) a suitable increase in tension is good for the installation because it makes the pipeline configuration more flat; (2) deep water may result in steep configuration and large moment peak near the seabed, which is harmful to the pipeline installation; and (3) the current force has the same effect on the pipeline installation when it is opposite to the forward direction.
